CALIFORNIA Physics – Harold Lewis, Emeritus Professor of Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara spoke out on global warming in a letter of resignation to Curtis G. Callan Jr, Princeton University, President of the American Physics Society. He stated, “It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist. Anyone who has the faintest doubt that this is so should force himself to read the ClimateGate documents, which lay it bare.”

CALIFORNIA Genetics – The third ever mosquito genome to be fully sequenced was recently produced in a study co-authored by Peter Arensburger of the University of California. The southern house mosquito lives off birds, livestock and humans in tropical and temperate regions, and is responsible for a host of diseases and parasites. Scientists say that effective pesticides can now be developed to deal with the insect.

CALIFORNIA Medicine – The largest ever study on childhood obesity kicks between the University of Kansas, the University of South Carolina and the University of California at Berkley to determine the best public health activities to combat the problem. Children and their families will be selected at random to participate in the study and some will be followed for 2-3 years. The researchers will also work from medical records observing the rates of change and growth, gather information about the communities in which the children live, what activities are offered and the nature and availability of programs aimed at reducing obesity.

CALIFORNIA Oncology – When cells are under duress a special auto destruct mechanism is initiated that will destroy infected or abnormal cells. Tumors find ways to bypass or ‘switch off’ this mechanism in order to multiply successfully. Like tumor cells, adenoviruses, which cause upper-respiratory infections, do the same in order to infect a cell. This mechanism could lead to a new type of targeted cancer therapy, according to researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

California, Psychology – Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have discovered that person’s characteristic features remain fairly stable over time. The conclusion is based on a research which studied young children character evaluations, provided by their teachers. Many years later, when assessed again, participants showed the same behavior patterns. The study was sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. For more information visit: www.vancouversun.com
California, Health – Researchers at Stanford University in California have identified the cause of Parkinson’s disease. Using a fruit fly helped them discover that a gene mutation triggers the irregular activity of protein production in brain cells and leads to the cells’ death. The breakthrough creates new hope for a cure for the degenerative disease. For more information visit: www.telegraph.co.uk
California, Space – NASA experts and an international team of scientists believe that there is a potential risk of collision between a huge asteroid and the Earth, 172 years from now. The asteroid was discovered about 12 years ago but it is only now that scientists consider it a potential risk. According to scientists, it could annihilate whole cities, creating a several-mile hole. Despite that, the group urges calm, as the threat is not imminent. California, Technology – Intel has developed a microchip capable of transmitting huge amounts of information in a very short time. The chip uses light beams and is considered to be an efficient and low-cost way for use in electronic devices such as computers and smartphones. Experts think that the new technology will take the place of the traditional copper which is unreliable when transmitting large amounts of data as it can affect the electronic signal. California, Health – Scientists at the University of California, San Diego have developed a new medical device to test the blood sugar of diabetic patients. The device has been tested on pigs for about a year and proved to be a reliable method for diabetes type 1 and 2 treatment. It is an implantable sensor which measures glucose and transmits the data wirelessly. According to the researchers, it could be very helpful for parents who have diabetic children in informing them with a signal whenever the child’s sugar reaches a dangerous level.
